Mirpur School Lunch Initiative

40 young children are fed healthy lunches daily at the local free school in Mirpur, Dhaka, Bangladesh.

At the local free children’s school in Uttar Kafrul, Mirpur, Dhaka, Bangladesh, 40 young children are being fed lunch everyday through BDCF. Most of these children’s parents cannot send them to private learning centers due to costs, even though those schools have better literacy and secondary schooling rates. Free local schools like this one in Mirpur do not have enough funding to employ more than one teacher, let alone feeding the children during lunch time.

Shumita Islam Parveen, teacher in photo, recalls “দুপুরের খাবার আসলে লাঞ্চ ছিল না। আমার প্রায় আশি শতাংশ বাচ্চাদের খাওয়ার কিছু ছিল না। আমার ইচ্ছা ছিল আমি তাদের খাওয়াতে পারতাম কিন্তু সত্যই আমি তাও বহন করতে পারি না। আমি যখনই পারতাম তাদের স্ন্যাকস দিয়েছিলাম, ঘি দিয়ে রুটি, তারা এটা পছন্দ করে! আমি আপনার প্রদান সাহায্যের জন্য কৃতজ্ঞ — Lunchtime was not really lunchtime. Almost eighty percent of my children did not have anything to eat. I wished I could feed them but truthfully I can’t afford that either. I gave them snacks whenever I could, bread with ghee, they love it! I am grateful for the help you provide.”

A special thank you to Mr. Azmol Khan and students at Mirpur Government High School for assisting in the logistics for this wonderful initiative.
